Basics Musts for Travelling Anywhere

Travelling is something that people always yearn to do, but it can sometimes be a daunting task having to plan for it. I have been travelling for a long time and I have learned from experiences and picked up some useful tips along the way. These may not work for everyone, but I  think that they should generally work for most people. So, here are some of the Basic Musts one has to consider when Travelling anywhere in the world, be it locally or abroad.

  1. Research place/country you will be visiting. It is important to find out about the place you would like to visit in terms of the weather/climate, activities and places of interest. It is also advisable to learn about the do’s and don’ts of that particular place. It can get awkward and rather uncomfortable if you are dressed inappropriately or offend the locals by mistake.
  2. Give yourself enough time to save up and put aside money for your travels. It’s not nice to run out of money while you are still on holiday. I like to have enough money to ensure that I have covered for transport, accommodation, food, excursions and a splurge or three. Other expense that tend to be forgotten are for the pre-trip arrangements, like getting a visa, vaccinations, medication, travel insurance and other necessities. Always make sure you have more than enough money. It’s better to have money left over than the alternative.
  3. Plan your trip, but not too much. Things can and often to go wrong and if you have this picture of what your trip was supposed to look like that can leave you stressed out instead of enjoying your trip. Plan for one or two must-do activities, and remain flexible for the rest.
  4. Take travel medication. Growing up I had a really sensitive stomach, and eating food from other places used to be a challenge. I have learnt to always have stomach medication with in case I get diarrhea. I also always pack pain killers, anti-biotics (in case of tick bite fever or malaria). Also ensure you have taken all appropriate vaccinations.
  5. Communicate now and then. Contact family and friends now and then, not only to share your experience but to also show that you are okay wherever you are. In my case I send my mother pictures every night before going to bed, to show what I got up to on the day and to let her know I am safe.
  6. Always have enough cash on hand. It is smart to use your credit card/world card. There can be instances where the area you are in does not accept cards, and therefore it is important to always have some cash with you. It can be useful for paying for food, buying curios, etc.
  7. Keep and stay healthy. When you’re on holiday one tends to throw  diet out the window, you don’t exercise, or even not get enough sleep. I’m not saying don’t immerse yourself in local cuisine, I’m just pointing out it has to be in moderation. I normally make sure I have a healthy  fruit breakfast, and drink tea or water more than other drinks. You don’t have to out right exercise if you don’t want to, but you can incorporate walking into your trip. Make sure you stay hydrated, drink a lot of water, and get enough sleep.

I hope these tips have been helpful and come in handy. If there are any others that I have missed please feel free to add them in the comments. I am always looking to improve on my travel experiences.

  1. Good post! These tips really can apply to any destination you choose to travel too! I agree that saving more than you think you’ll spend (even once you think you’ve got all finances planned to a T) is critical. For example, you never know what could pop up – maybe a train to the airport gets delayed and you have to take a cab. I also like to have a separate account/card for travel. I’ve actually had credit card details stolen before, so I to make sure that my separate account has some limitations on funds.

    1. Thank you for your comment Snowtoseas :). And you are right about having a separate card for travel. I sometimes just get a world card rather than use my own credit card, depending on the place I am going.

  2. I totally agree about this. I spend almost 5 months for planning a trip, especially if it’s a solo trip. I’m actually planning for one and am super nervous about everything. I think besides researching the destination, it’s important to read other people’s experiences too on their blogs or books, just be more mentally prepared.

    1. Hi Adelheid. I totally agree about also looking at other people’s experience. I have actually done that many times when I have travelled solo. My Asia trip is an example.
